How to lubricate your treadmill

Treadmill belt lubrication: it’s so important.

Lubricating your treadmill is one of the most important things you can do to prolong the life of your treadmill belt and deck. Most home treadmills use liquid silicone for lubrication which you can apply yourself within moments. If you’d like to have some treadmill lubricant sent to your door simply buy treadmill lubricant online . Or if you’d rather us just service your treadmill give us a call on +64-9-836-0910. For those of you that would like to know why you need to lubricate your treadmill, I’ve dedicated a page to help you look after your treadmill. Why should I lubricate my treadmill?

All treadmills suffer from wear in their running belt and deck surfaces. It’s like the tyres on a car. The running belt rotates around a roller at each end of the deck. The underside of the belt drags along the top surface of the deck when your feet make contact with the running belt. Unfortunately when these components wear they create extra resistance on the electronics and motor and can even cause your deck to break.

The extra friction will cause these components to run hotter and shorten their lives. The treadmill running belt runs hotter and so does the treadmill deck. The treadmill motor runs hotter as it has to draw higher amps to maintain a given set speed. And so does the motor control board as it has to supply the motor with higher amps. To overcome the friction on the treadmill belt and deck all you need to do is lubricate between the treadmills running belt and deck. You can buy treadmill lubricant online . That’s assuming you haven’t already damaged it to the point of needing a replacement treadmill belt

There is a point of no return though.

Replacement treadmill belt: Do I need one?

When the current draw gets too high the treadmill will shut itself down. If your treadmill stops abruptly when you’re on it, resist the temptation of restarting it even if it will. The treadmill has stopped to try and protect its electronics. By restarting your treadmill you greatly increase the risk of damaging your treadmills electronics further which you will need to get replaced.

Lubricating your treadmill will help prolong the life of your running belt and deck which in turn will prolong the life of your motor and electrics. However lubricating your worn treadmill belt and deck won’t help at all. At this point, you’ll need a replacement treadmill belt and deck. If your treadmill is shutting down or stopping by itself, or if your treadmill smells hot. Maybe it sounds different because it’s not running as fast because there’s too much friction between the running belt and deck. All these symptoms mean you need a replacement treadmill belt and deck.  Give us a call on +64-9-836-0910 or check out our page replacement treadmill belts

Lubricate your treadmill

Remember that the treadmill lubricant will dry out quicker in summer and or if the treadmill is in a hot sunny room.

If you haven’t used your treadmill for a few months, check that it needs lubricating before you start using it again. I have a lot of people ring me in this situation. Their treadmill has been sitting for six months and then feeling all inspired they train every day for 2 or 3 weeks. Then their treadmill stopped abruptly. So they wait until the next day and it turns on. So they start using again, and it stops again. Sometimes the treadmill will only stop 2 or 3 times and before you need to rebuild your treadmill.

Guide to lubricating your treadmill

Remove the safety key so the treadmill can’t start. At the front of the running belt pull up the left and then the right edge of the belt.  About 100 to 150 mm back from the motor cover where your feet would be. Insert the spout of the bottle under the belt. Squirt about 20 ml of lubricant under each side towards the centre.

Make sure the belt is sitting under the side rails how it was before you started. Put the safety key back on, stand on the side rails and start the treadmill. At a slow walk position your feet near the edges of the belt so the lubricant will spread towards the centre of the deck. Walk for a minute or two so the lubricant will spread over the front half of the deck.

It will vary how often you need to do this. It depends on how much the treadmill gets used. If you haven’t used your treadmill for a few months make sure you lubricate it before you start using it again.  Do you use your treadmill for under 2 hours a week? Then do it 3 monthly. And if you use your treadmill for up to 7 hours a week then do it every 2 months. If you use your treadmill over 7 hours a week then check the deck every month.

Does your treadmill need lubricating?

To check that your treadmill needs lubricating lift the edges of the belt and see if you can smear the silicon on the surface of the deck. If it is dry then it needs doing.  If your treadmill hasn’t been used for a while or you’ve over lubricated it the silicon may feel thick like a gel. You can wipe the silicon clean with a clean cloth and then re-lubricate it. If you have been over-lubricating check for silicon puddling under the motor cover  (or under the machine). Just unplug the treadmill first before you take the motor cover off.

Rob was really helpful and fair in assessing my treadmill, suggesting solutions, guiding me through the process and ultimately fixing my issue and servicing the machine. He is a one man band, so there may be times when he is unable to answer phone calls, messages, emails or get back to you quickly, but persevere, as once he has committed to your job he does it well. He also assisted me with picking up my treadmill and dropping it off, which was over and above the expectation. A great guy, just needs you to be a little patient and understanding with the communication.
